🎉 Join SOS in the Canada Day Parade! 🎉Help us decorate our float, bus and truck, and walk with us in this community celebration! 🕖 Meet at the SOS Community Services Centre (245 Hirst Ave. W.) at 7 am on July 1 if you want to help with decorating.🚌 We leave SOS at 8:30 am to head to the mustering area (Shelly Rd. & Pioneer Cres.). Feel free to meet us there... the parade starts at 10 am sharp!🚶 We’ll walk the Island Hwy and Craig St. and end at the Parksville Community Centre.✨ Wear sunscreen, a hat and comfy shoes. Thank you to Brenda Wasnock for her work as SOS Seniors’ Advocacy Coordinator, where she supported adults aged 60+ with advocacy and emergency services. While we’re sad to see her go, we’re grateful for the care and compassion she brought into her role, and we wish her all the best in retirement!Brenda was able to secure $407,490 in back pay for clients with the help of the MP’s office. Those same individuals are now collectively receiving more than $70,926 in additional monthly income.As Seniors’ Advocacy Coordinator, Brenda met with seniors privately and together they explored their needs and concerns, then made concrete plans to address each of them. When asked what she enjoyed most about her role, she said, “Assisting people to be heard, to gain the supports and funds they are entitled to, to avoid homelessness, to deal effectively with problems, to better budget, to gain more income and reduce their expenses.”Brenda is looking forward to enjoying summer, where you will find her reading—she averages three books a week!Reflecting on her career, Brenda added, “Loved my work! My 35 years of social work and program coordination gave me a broad range of experience working with people of all ages, genders and abilities. All along the way, my clients taught me new things every day and, as a lifelong learner, I appreciated them all very much. My two years at SOS has been a wonderful experience to complete my 60 years of work!”Thank you, Brenda, for your heart, wisdom and advocacy. You’ve made a lasting impact.
